Tapora Golf Club

Tapora Golf Club 648 Okahukura Road Tapora Forty five years old and there are still many in Rodney who haven’t been there yet . This is a nine hole course with an almost different layout for those who choose to play eighteen holes . Only the third and twelfth are exactly the same ,every other hole has different tees and flags and very often quite different features.

This is a links course on the Tapora Recreational Reserve which is now managed by the golf club and has been so since 2003 and in this time there have been marked changes taking place . The sheep that mowed fairways are now a quite distant memory ,even the yards have recently been demolished with the little shed built to shed sheep for shearing is now home to three ride on mowers and much other more modern course care essentials . Part of the role of managing the reserve has seen many trees planted through support from both the ARC environment initiatives grants and funding from Rodney District natural heritage fund . A wetland has been well fenced and planting’s of pohutukawa and other native trees define most fairways .

The clubhouse had a major make over in 2002 and is very often the busiest spot in the district with the Friday evening fish and chip in house or takeaway option having a much larger clientele than the Saturday golf .This building is still the headquarters and launching platform for many district initiatives and endeavours , meetings for the Tapora Land and Coast Care Group , many farm merchandise displays from rural service firms , safety and other farm training exercises .Throughout the forty plus years of the club’s existence meetings and gatherings from the community have included big numbers of residents who competed as tug of war teams in the early eighties at the Wellsford show (winners and runners up for both heavyweight and lightweight teams of five and we also had a successful women’s team as well , National party , Federated farmer golf days and fertilizer seminars (please note that these were separate events). There have been country fair days ,a clay bird shooting venue and for many years the Tapora fun run around the 11.3 kilometres of Okahukura road began and ended at the clubhouse .

Annual highlights include the Hit and Hook tournament , held mid March to raise funds for the Westpac Rescue Helicopter . 2009 saw $4 000 raised and more than twenty teams of three enjoyed the competition of fishing Saturday with points awarded for catching Gurnard ,Kahawai and Snapper and bonus points for landing the longest of any of these specie and then a nine hole Ambrose golf competition on the Sunday.

Early Autumn also features a Tournament that has huge input from many of our city members . Next years event will be the sixth time we have staged what we are now calling the Okahukura classic .A hangi meal , a full field and a great deal of song and laughter and as with the Hit and hook tourney a large number of entrants bring tents etc. for the weekend .Halls Retravision have sponsored tournaments for this club for more than two decades and this year their tournament is on Saturday 31st October . Twilight golf is usually a busy time for the club and a feature is that the sponsors for these occasions more often than not began their association with this club as juniors or began playing golf in this district.

Juniors playing and excelling at the game of golf has long been the norm at Tapora and while numbers are less than desired at present the opportunity to participate is still very much an option .Throughout the past four and a half decades a total of at least eight Tapora juniors have represented provinces at junior or development level and at an interprovincial tourney this century Northland was represented by Reece Mist ,North Harbour by Aaron Garnett and Waikato by Mark Western and all three had began as golfers in Tapora before they reached their teens . Julie McConnell and Aroha Tito both represented New Zealand as juniors as well as being for some time the number one players for their province and Aroha has added a number of NZ Maori titles to her resume .Aroha has represented Northland again this year in the national inter provincial competition and much of her spare time is taken in coaching young golfers and helping to organize regional and national Maori golf events .
